How Does Air Conditioning Work?

How the Process Works

  2. This air flows over cold evaporator coils, cooling the air and removing excess moisture.
  3. A refrigerant within the chiller coils absorbs heat from the air, transforming from a cool liquid to a warm gas.
  4. The warm gas is pumped outside, and the refrigerant flows through a compressor unit and a condenser, returning it to a cool liquid state.
  5. Cold air is circulated back into the room, mixing with existing air, reducing temperature and humidity.

Components of an Air Conditioning System
  1. Evaporator: The warm air from inside the space passes through an expansion valve and is blown over cold evaporator coils, which absorb heat from the air. The refrigerant within the coils then changes back into a gas and moves towards the compressor.
  2. Compressor: Acting as a pump in the air conditioning system, the compressor reduces the gas’s volume and raises its pressure and temperature for condensing.
  3. Condenser: The condenser takes the heat collected from inside the room by the refrigerant, now in vapor form, and pumps it outside. The outside air absorbs the heat, changing the refrigerant into liquid.
  4. Pipes: Connecting the indoor and outdoor units in a split or multi-split system, these pipes are responsible for carrying the refrigerant between components.
  5. Fans: Located both inside and outside the unit, these fans keep air circulating over the coils and throughout the property.
  6. Thermostat allows users to regulate and program the air conditioning system to maintain the desired temperature.
